Strengthening the Movement Against Torture
As a member of the United Against Torture (UATC) Consortium, REDRESS has supported more than 46 organisations through projects aimed at combating torture and other forms of violence against dissenting voices, including human rights defenders and LGBTIQ+ persons. REDRESS’s support has combined financial subgrants with organisational strengthening initiatives designed to enhance sustainability, build capacity, and provide technical expertise across a range of areas.
The projects led by national and regional organisations supported by REDRESS have included strategic litigation, documentation, advocacy initiatives, international engagement, training programmes, and other activities aimed at driving structural change. These efforts seek to promote accountability, secure reparations for victims, and prevent the recurrence of violence and torture against those who challenge injustice and exercise their fundamental rights.
REDRESS’s support has also fostered a global community of practice among partner organisations, creating opportunities to share knowledge, expertise, and lessons learned through interactive webinars, peer exchanges, and short articles. This community of practice promotes meaningful and horizontal collaboration, enabling organisations to exchange effective strategies and innovative approaches for combating torture in diverse contexts around the world.
This REDRESS blog series highlights some of the most significant achievements and impacts of projects led by partner organisations. Their experiences demonstrate both the importance and urgency of supporting the anti-torture movement at local, national, regional, and international levels. By showcasing successful initiatives and practical lessons learned, the series aims to inspire practitioners and advocates working in different contexts and contribute to stronger collective action against torture worldwide.
