LGBT groups from Peru denounce the discrimination, violence and torture they suffer before the Inter-American Commission on human rights in Lima
Leading LGTB organisations from Peru will testify in a special hearing of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in Washington D.C. on Friday 28 October, to present evidence about the discrimination and violence that lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders in the Americas continue to suffer.
The organisations are Red Peruana TLGB, Centro de Promoción y Defensa de los Derechos Sexuales y Reproductivos PROMSEX, Coordinadora Nacional de Derechos Humanos (CNDDHH) and Centro por la Justicia y el Derecho Internacional (CEJIL). REDRESS Trust, a London-based NGO that helps victims of torture worldwide, will also testify with the Peruvian delegation.
The organisations will testify about the violence, discrimination and torture that many LGBT citizens in Latin America and the Caribbean still suffer because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. The Peruvian organisations have been helping an individual who was tortured by the police in Peru, and targeted because of his sexual orientation.
His case is currently pending before the Inter-American Commission. The targeting of LGBT people by the police in Peru will be one of the issues raised. The Peruvian delegation will also state that, despite the regulatory framework and the international treaties that Peru has ratified, there is a gap between the law and its application. This puts the LGBT community in a situation of vulnerability and disadvantage.
The delegation from Peru is composed by Maribel Reyes Pérez, a lesbian activist from Red Peruana TLGB; Ysabel Marín, a lawyer from PROMSEX; George Liendo, representative from PROMSEX and ILGA-LAC, and Víctor Álvarez, head of the legal division of CNDDHH and a representative of REDRESS.
A delegation from Venezuela and REDLACTRANS will also participate in the hearing. The hearing will take place between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the Padilha Vidal Room, at the headquarters of the Organisation of American States (OAE), in Washington D.C. It can be followed live here:
