Policies and procedures

The REDRESS Board of Directors is responsible for the overall governance of the organisation and has adopted a number of policies and codes of practice, which are set out below.

In keeping with our commitment to transparency, we share our core policies in order to assist other organisations developing their own frameworks for organisational strengthening. We hope these policies can serve as adaptable guidelines in various contexts.

► Anti-Bribery and Corruption policy

REDRESS has a zero-tolerance approach towards the payment or receipt of bribes or of corruption in any form. We aspire to promote best practice and to comply with relevant laws in all jurisdictions in which we operate.

The purpose of this policy is to identify the risks of bribery and corruption in the work of REDRESS, and sets out procedures to mitigate those risks and respond to any incidents that may occur.

► Conflict of interest policy

REDRESS abides by the legal obligations related to conflicts of interest which could affect trustees and senior staff (the management committee) (designated persons) of the charity.

The purpose of this policy is to draw attention to potential conflicts of interest, and sets out the process to identify, avoid, and respond to any potential conflicts to protect the interests of the charity.

REDRESS is committed to protecting your privacy and will only use the information that we collect about you lawfully. In carrying out our day-to-day activities we process, and store personal information and we adhere to the requirements of the UK Data Protection Act (DPA) 1998 and the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) 2018.

► Dignity at work policy

REDRESS promotes a good and harmonious working environment in which our employees are treated with dignity and respect. We will not tolerate any form of harassment or bullying. Harassment (including sexual harassment) and bullying damage the health, confidence, morale and performance of employees who are affected by them.

The purpose of this policy is to encourage an organisational culture that is tolerant, open, and inclusive, where people feel safe and are encouraged, valued, and respected, to prevent bullying or harassment, and provide an effective response if it does happen.

► Environment policy

REDRESS is aware of the significant environmental challenges that society must address together. Environmental changes affect the human rights landscape and disproportionally impact persons in situations of vulnerability. As an environmentally responsible organisation, REDRESS is committed to limiting the negative environmental impact of its action and strive to reduce its carbon and environmental footprint.

This policy sets out REDRESS’ approach to limiting the environmental impact of our work.

► Equality policy

REDRESS is a rights-based organisation, and equality and non-discrimination are internationally recognised human rights and values. REDRESS is aware of its responsibility to promote these rights and values, both within its organisation and beyond it.

This policy sets out REDRESS’s commitment to tackling all forms of discrimination and inequality and the positive steps we will take to eliminate discrimination on the grounds of sex, sexual orientation, gender identities/expressions and gender reassignment, age, HIV status, disability, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, ethnic origin, colour, class, nationality, national origin, economic status, religion or belief.

► Fundraising policy

REDRESS is registered with the Fundraising Regulator and is committed to legal, open, honest and respectful fundraising. We adhere to the Code of Fundraising Practice and in doing so, we make thisFundraising Promise to supporters.

This policy defines how we ensure these standards are met across funding sources, to assist trustees, staff, and donors.

► Safeguarding policy

Safeguarding means taking all reasonable steps to prevent harm, particularly sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment from occurring; to protect children and vulnerable adults (including survivors of torture) from that harm; and to respond appropriately when harm does occur.

REDRESS’ policy is that everyone we encounter, regardless of age, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnic origin has the right to be protected from all forms of harm, abuse, neglect, and exploitation. REDRESS will not tolerate abuse and exploitation by staff or associated personnel.

This policy sets out the commitments made by REDRESS and sets out procedures for prevention, reporting, and response.

► Partnerships policy

One of REDRESS’ institutional values is that we work in collaborative partnership with national and regional partners, as well as other international NGOs. Our national partners bring direct experience and expertise of the relevant facts, law, and policy questions. Our regional partners bring a detailed knowledge of the regional human rights systems, and how best to develop and deliver policy advocacy to those bodies. Our international partners bring specialist expertise in other areas of anti-torture work, such as medical documentation, rehabilitation, prevention, activism, and UN advocacy.

This policy explains the principles behind the REDRESS partnerships model and the procedures that are used to deliver collaborative partnerships in practice.

► Whistleblowing policy

REDRESS operates at all times with the highest standards of integrity and honesty. It expects all its employees to maintain the same standards in their work. It is important that any fraud, misconduct or wrongdoing by employees of the charity is reported and properly dealt with.

The policy sets out how individuals can raise genuine concerns about possible relevant wrongdoing at work without fear of reprisal and to reassure that such matters will be dealt with seriously and effectively by REDRESS;
