Help for Survivors
Torture aims to de–humanise survivors through calculated acts of cruelty to remove the survivors’ dignity and make them powerless. It is a very serious human rights violation and an international crime.
Torture often has a profound and long-term impact on the individual, the family, and the community. Despite this, many survivors of torture do go on to rebuild their lives, which is a testament to their strength and tenacity. Having access to the right support can help survivors in their process of healing.
At different times, survivors (and their families) may need different types of support. Sometimes specialist legal advice is required, but sometimes the issues may be much more basic and practical. Sometimes it is enough simply to read stories from other survivors.
